Cycled along the canal in gorgeous sunshine today and went to see this exhibition at Victoria Miro Gallery, big paintings with a strong presence I thought.
Rob Phoenix is having his first london solo show this weekend at (AND/OR) Gallery in Hackney, I first met Rob when he interviewed me and Conor for his side project Failed Rock Star a couple of years ago and we struck up an immediate friendship, he is one of the most committed and passionate painters I know as well as being lots of fun and a very nice person.
Having just come back from my travels it was a real treat to go and see Chris Ofili at Tate Britain, an artist whose work seamlessly bridges the chasm between places, cultures and peoples in such a sparkly and fun way. Being Black, British and having travelled to Africa, Berlin, studied and worked in London, had studios in Kings Cross and now Trinidad I guess he’s in a fairly unique position being able to comment on multiculturalism or cross culturalism or whatever you want to call it, but I get the feeling that mostly he is just being honest. And apart from being breathtakingly beautiful and technically marvelous it’s the honesty in his work that seduced the most. For me the Upper Room is the apex of his achievements and a humbling testament to the power of art.
